The ranking is based on a wide range of criteria including cost of attendance, graduation rates, strong financial aid support, low debt and alumni success.

Money鈥檚 analysis looked at all 2,400聽four-year public and private nonprofit colleges in the country. To make the initial cut, a college had to: have at least 500 undergraduate or 150 first year students; have sufficient, reliable data to be analyzed; not be in financial distress and; have a graduation rate at or above the median for its institutional category (public, private or historically black college or university), or have a high 鈥渧alue-added鈥� graduation rate (in other words: score in the top 25% of graduation rates after accounting for the student body).

A total of 745 schools met these requirements, then were given their star rating based on 25 factors in three categories:

Quality of education (30%)聽鈥� factors include graduation rates, instructor access and Pell Grant recipient outcomes.
Affordability (40%)聽鈥� factors include net price of a degree and student debt.
Outcomes (30%)聽鈥� factors include earnings 10 years after college entry and college scorecard employment outcomes.
